The company was started by Basil van Rooyen and Louise Grantham. We publish books for the general reading public in South Africa – books that will have a market in South African bookshops. Our focus is currently on non-fiction books for adult readers.
Our Rainbird division offers professional publishing services to individuals and organisations who need help publishing their own work.
How we sell and market our books
Nicola van Rooyen runs Bookstorm’s sales and marketing department and our warehousing and distributions handled by Booksite Afrika in Cape Town. We co-publish some of our Afrikaans titles with NB Publishers and in these instances they handle sales and marketing on these titles
More about how to buy our books
Louise Grantham started her publishing career at Southern Book Publishers (which later became part of the New Holland Struik Group) where she fulfilled a number of roles from assistant editor, to publishing director and general manager. She published a wide range of authors including Ken Newman, Chris and Tilde Stuart, Peter Apps, Jacques Pauw, Margaret Roberts and many others. In 2000 she set up a consulting company, the-e-junction, which worked on information systems for publishers in South Africa and the UK. She also ran the Publishing Studies Honours Degree course at the University of the Witwatersrand between 2003 and 2007 and found that teaching gave her exciting new perspectives on publishing. In 2008 Louise joined Penguin South Africa as Publisher where she worked with authors such as John van de Ruit, Justin Bonello, Heidi Holland, Pippa Green, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Simon Gear, David O’Sullivan, Alan Knott-Craig, Jacques Pauw, Damon Galgut, Chinua Achebe, Zakes Mda, Melinda Ferguson and many other wonderful writers. She left Penguin to set up Bookstorm.
NB Publishers – Afrikaans co-publishing partners on selected titles
Trade publishing is something that gets under your skin – there is nothing to beat the thrill of developing ideas with authors and seeing them grow into something more than either of you could have come up with on your own. At Bookstorm we will develop these synergies to bring fresh ideas and new voices to South African bookshelves.
